PSG Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.
PSG has now secured the prestigious trophy on fourteen separate occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.
The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.
Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.
In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing shootout victory.
Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
