Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
