A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
